Facebook in 2019

Have you guys noticed the amount of people, leaving Facebook in 2018? It was like an avalanche… Or was it?

I remember first watching an interview with founder and former Facebook CEO Chamath Palihapitiya , who said:
“I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works. No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. You are being programmed”

That was in 2017 and the video is here

The interview went viral and lots of people started posting about thinking of leaving all social media behind…

And quite a lot of people really left. Usually Facebook but also Twitter lost thousands of users. But in spite of the media coverage of the trend, nothing really happened. My friend, for example. A year ago posted on his FB wall “I’m leaving. Bye”. It was sort of sad and melodramatic… or at least he imagined that. Because what hapened was this: He posted the post. A handful of his friends commented that it was a great move and they will follow as soon as…. as what exactly? Because that took about an hour or so and then everyone went coping with their daily programs and THAT WAS IT.

Nothing really happened, he didn’t start any movement in his social circle, nothing.

So what REALLY happened was that after a couple of months he was back. With some lame excuse “yeah, but I will control my time here” blahblahblah…..

You know what? I really think that nothing is really about to change here. Not in 2019.
